Greetings from Truman faculty, staff and students! As Missouri's premier liberal arts and sciences university, Truman is poised to make 1998 a year of academic achievement and personal growth for all its students. We continue our focus on student learning and on providing a high quality education to talented students at an affordable price. We begin the year with a beautiful new addition to campus, the student-funded Student Recreation Center. Take a look at pages 6 and 7 to see just how impressive this facility is and why nearly 800 Truman students visit it each week. Truman students and faculty are eagerly awaiting the renovation of Violette Hall, expected to be completed this fall. See page 4 about the 1997-98 Parents Council Project, equipping a state-of-the-art computer lab in Violette Hall with multi-media capabilities and Internet access. The lab will provide on-campus access to all students, particularly those who may not have the resources to purchase a personal computer. Truman parents have already pledged nearly $50,000 through the Tel-Alumni program for this important project. Truman alumni returned to campus last fall for a number of reunions and social activities during Homecoming weekend. I always enjoy visiting with alumni, but I was especially delighted to see my friends from the Class of 1957. Homecoming '97 is highlighted after the Alumni News section. Please also take a moment to read what others are saying about Truman State University (back cover). The last several months brought prominent national media attention focusing on the quality and affordability of a Truman education. As alumni and friends of the University, you know the value of these accolades for students who will be entering the job market or pursuing advanced degrees. I report all of this good news with joy and humility. It is truly a pleasure to serve as the president of Truman and work with a community of talented faculty, staff, alumni and students. May the new year bring growth and success to our entire Truman family.
Cordially,
Jack Magruder
